100 Billion Dollars
Let there be no doubt about it: people are traveling. U.S. leisure travel alone is a 100 BILLION- dollar industry. Why? Because everyone loves to travel. Sure, when times are tough, consumers might forgo that two-week trip to the French Riviera, but they don’t give up their one-tank trips.
Studies show that - in good times and in bad - Americans take more mini-vacations than extended ones, especially to destinations within driving distance of their own backyards. In fact, the U.S. Travel Association (USTA) reports that 76% of leisure travelers prefer driving as their primary means of transportation to and from their vacation destinations.
So where is everything going?
According to The American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA), the top 10 U.S. vacation destinations are Orlando; Las Vegas; New York City; San Francisco; Miami; Los Angeles; San Diego; Honolulu; Seattle and Washington, DC.
Orlando and Las Vegas have secured the top two spots for eight years running, with 51.3 million and 49 million visitors a year, respectively. Toss in New York at 48 mil, San Fran at 35, and Miami at 32, and it adds up to nearly 250 million travelers to just the top five. A quarter-billion happy campers.
Top 5 Visited U.S. Cities
In addition, the U.S. Census Bureau’s findings indicate that among the top 20 fastest growing cities, more than half are located in the Sunbelt; in other words, the warmer regions of the country - such as Daytona, Ft. Lauderdale, Gatlinburg, Nashville and Myrtle Beach, among many others.
Grab a slice
Poweroftravel.org cites that U.S. residents logged 1.5 billion personal trips for leisure purposes in 2010, reporting the top leisure domestic travel activities as 1) visiting relatives; 2) shopping; 3) visiting friends, 4) rural sightseeing and 5) beaches.
Seize the opportunity to give your customers what they really want. And that’s Your Getaway, a complimentary three-day, two night stay at one of dozens of popular destinations. Everyone loves to travel.
